Known Problems & Book Errata

Book Errata

Page 3-17: Example's step 3 dialog.
Currently Shows: ...and apply to stack '1' of '2' stacks.
Should Show: ...and apply to stack '2' of '2' stacks.

Page 3-54: Example: Booklets that use covers; Step 6 & 7.
Replace: Steps 6 & 7.
With the steps: 6. Move to the 'Special' tab, click the 'Binding Method...' and then the 'right side' binding button. Click 'OK' twice and return.
- When a single cover is used, you must choose the opposite binding from normal. This will cause the fronts & backs to switch sides on the output.

7. Now, following Step 6, change the 'Booklet' object on 'Paper 2' and choose the 'right side' binding button.

Page 4-13: Example: Part 3's step 7.
Currently Reads: ...and then position the object inset 0.25 inches from the left...
Should Read: ...and then position the object inset 0.375 inches from the left...

Known Problems
The problems shown below are the ones that MindGate currently knows as a result of user reports. Should you find another problem, please report it so we can correct the situation as soon as possible.

Quark XPress
Where: PostScript printers
Tech ID: 980220001
Status: Workarounds
Problem: Quark is the only application that misuses the PPD file interface of PostScript printers to attempt to bypass the PrintChef controls. This typically occurs when you are designing new paper and page sizes and want XPress to adjust to those changes. In short, to work around this problem, design your layout and select the page size in XPress without using the printing style to setup the size. Then, in the printing style, mimic the XPress layout using the Paper Designer, the non-standard printing option "Don't Stretch Pages", and the "Adjust Position" option to correlate the printing style to the XPress environment.

All other programs have no problem with this--
Are you listening Quark?

Okey Dokey Utility
Where: All printers
Tech ID: 980122001
Status: Investigating the utility interface
Problem: Okey Dokey is a utility that automatically answers "OK" to a dialog that has been on the screen for a set length of time. When you use this utility with PrintChef, printing will lock up.

Black & White Machines
Where: Dialogs
Tech ID: 980122003
Status: Investigating our special button handler
Problem: If you select only a black & white monitor setup, the PrintChef tabs and buttons show their gray as pure black. This minor oversight should be easily and quickly remedied in the next update.

Extensis Printing Tools with PageMaker
Where: Printing
Tech ID: 980123001
Status: Investigating the tool
Problem: When you want to PrintChef in PageMaker, you use the option key while activating printing. PageMaker then activates the Apple dialogs (which contain PrintChef). Extensis Printing Tools prevent PageMaker from activating the Apple dialogs and hence PrintChef. This is not a PrintChef problem, but an Extensis-PageMaker problem.

Quick Faxes
Where: Non-PostScript faxing
Tech ID: 980123001
Status: In contact with global village
Problem: When using the global village fax system and the quick-fax option, the page spools, but nothing happens. Normal faxing seems to work perfectly well.

FreeHand & MindGate Models
Where: PostScript printing
Tech ID: 960324001
Status: Cannot correct, Freehand's problem
Problem: Freehand does not use standard text drawing to output text to the printer. As a result, PrintChef cannot intercept the output and convert the text to the model's graphic.

FreeHand & Preview/PICT Resolution
Where: Non-PostScript printers
Tech ID: 960324002
Status: Cannot correct, Freehand's problem
Problem: When Freehand creates a PICT image directly, or when it creates a PICT image as a part of a Mac EPS image, it creates this image as a bitmap. Unfortunately, this means the output quality of the PICT image (as in the case of a non-PostScript printer) is poor.

One solution is to create an image that is 4 times larger, import it into PrintChef and then scale it down 25%. This will increase the effective resolution. However, because Freehand choses to create images as bitmaps, it does mean longer download and print times.
